Chapter Twenty-eight

ANGELINA SHOT MOLLY a hard, questioning look. “Did you leave his wallet in his pocket?”

Craig couldn’t quite suppress a wordless sound of skepticism.

Both women ignored him.

“I would not steal his wallet!” Molly said, indignation in her tone and on her face.

“I wasn’t suggesting you would,” Angelina shot back. “I wasn’t sure if you figured it would be better to make his corp—his body—anonymous.” She waved her hand around to indicate the immaculate kitchen surroundings. “You got rid of the blood that was all over the place and made it look as if the murder had never happened here. Why couldn’t you dissolve a wallet at the same time?”

“Well, I didn’t,” Molly said, still in a huff.

That feeling of being in an alternate universe had Craig snaking his fingers through his hair. “Look. Let’s put this thing to bed. Angelina, go over to the hotel and check out the dumpster. I’ll hang out here and make sure no one comes in. If Fenner’s body is where Molly claims it is, call me.”

Angelina didn’t move. “What about Molly?”

Craig looked at Molly’s earnest, good-natured expression. What did he expect? The light of madness in her eyes? He knew better. “Molly goes back to her desk and handles the phones.”

“I think Molly should come with me,” Angelina said.

Craig knew Angelina had no idea of the danger she could be putting herself in by taking Molly along. If Molly suffered from some form of mental illness anything could trigger a violent episode. He didn’t want Angelina near a woman who was so delusional she believed she could magically move bodies from crime scenes. “No.”

Angelina drew herself up, a protest hovering on her lips, her expression annoyed.

Craig hurried on. “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

Angelina narrowed her eyes. “If Molly is with me and we get the opportunity, we can send Fenner’s body back here and re-create the murder scene.”

Molly said. “How will bringing Mr. Powell back fix your problems? Finding a body here at the college will only throw suspicion on Angelina and everyone else associated with the competition.”

Angelina shook her head. “Altering the scene of a murder is even worse. Come on, Molly. Let’s get going. I want to send Fenner back here as soon as we can.”

Molly sighed and threw up her hands in surrender. “All right. If you insist.”

Angelina nodded grimly. “I do.”

Nothing Craig said could stop Angelina from heading off to the hotel, Molly in tow. After they had gone he fumed and worried. Why was Angelina being so damn stubborn? Why couldn’t she walk over to the hotel and take a look in the dumpster on her own? She wasn’t going to find a body. Bodies couldn’t be magically transported from one place to another. It hadn’t happened.

And maybe that was the problem. He examined the kitchen, searching the brilliant white and gleaming stainless steel for a speck of blood, or a broken utensil—anything to indicate that a struggle resulting in a man’s death had taken place here. There was nothing.
